I agree with you, sokolgeo, that we shouldn't make TR too complicated. All I want is that before I schedule an appointment in TR, I can look at a visual representation of my day/week/month so that I know what I'm committing myself to. I don't need any sort of interaction or customization (beyond a choice between day, week, and month views). Just a picture is all.

Right now to get that I need to open an entirely different application. Worse, if I want an updated look after I make a change in TR, I need to wait for the other application to update, then refresh the visual (which, given my limited knowledge, often means closing the other application and opening it again). This seems cumbersome relative to the simplicity of the task and the number of times I want to do it.

If there is a way to do what I want with a simple, inexpensive application (NOT Outlook!), I'd be glad to do that instead. But I haven't found it yet. Sunbird, Rainlander, and the built-in calendar in Vista are either too complicated or visually uninformative (or both). Right now I'm using Google Calendar with GCalDaemon, but that that can take as long as 10 minutes to refresh.

Same with me. It is difficult to schedule something not having the overview. And simple tasks should no view at all. As David Allen says: The calendar is sacred territory.

I understand and share your reasoning.

I myself use Outlook for calendaring due to corporate rules.
Here in Outlook I check calendar status. Most of my meetings are sent to me via e-mail invitations, they also updated/changed a lot by original meeting organisers (more e-mail messages with updates to process).

It would be lovely for ThRock to accept and send meeting invitations and updates. But I expect it to be too complicated to implement - is that complexity estimated?

All I want to do is get a look at my calendar so that I can see what my day/week looks like.
For doing this in Mac OS X, I highly recommend the widget "iCal Events" (benkazez.com/icalevents.php)

Hi Karma,
Would you care to explain in some more detail how you do it to sync the iCal generated by ThinkingRock with the google calendar using gCal daemon?

I've installed gCal daemon and followed the instructions in the official documentation as well as these other instructions (tinyurl.com/5pxoj4) but I can't seem to manage to sync the two calendars.

Thank you so much in advance.

Edit:

Actually, this was a problem with Vista (damn Vista). I don't know what happens but when I configure gCal daemon the configuration is not saved (I do go to File menu and click 'save').

I actually managed to get gCal daemon to work in an XP machine but now the problem is even worse that not working at all. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but gCal daemon appears to do only one-way synchronization. When I ran gCal daemon, it managed to successfully upload the information from the TR generated iCal to my Google calendar but it deleted EVERYTHING that was previously there! This is not good because precisely (see below) what I was trying to do was to get my Outlook calendar synchronized with the iCal file generated by ThinkingRock.

Am I doing something wrong or two way sync with gCal daemon is just not possible?

Note: I posted this question also in the forum for all users. Sorry about the cross-posting but I don't know whether the same group of people read the two forums.

I should say this is what I'm trying to do while a better solution is found to make ThinkingRock available for the PocketPC.

Let me explain just in case this (potential) solution might be useful for somebody else.

Since I work with Windows and Linux machines, Google Calendar (with Google Calendar sync) has been a godsend to be able to sync calendar information between my Windows and Linux computers. Now my Outlook calendar in my PC is synced with Google calendar via Google Calendar sync.

Now, when I work with my Linux computer, I am hopeful to be able to sync Google Calendar (which contains the information from my Outlook calendar) with Thunderbird-Lightning using gCal daemon. Since Thunderbird-Lighning is able to read iCal format calendars, I can use it to read the iCal file generated by TR and sync that information with my Google Calendar which in turn will sync it with my Outlook calendar when I work in my Windows PC.

Since I have outlook installed in my PocketPC and I can sync it via ActiveSync, in principle I should be able to get all the actions and calendar information generated by ThinkingRock in my PocketPC Outlook.

This is not an ideal solution because some important GTD relevant information is lost in Outlook, but while some good mobile solution is created for TR I could get by.

The problem is that no matter how hard I try I'm not able to get the TR generated iCal file synchronized with my (Outlook based) Google Calendar.

Any help that I can get with this would be greatly appreciated.

I looked at MigCalendar and couldn't really figure out if Gants views are possible.
Also the use of different colors would be nice for the different context or Topics.
It seems to have different colors for different users/calendars.
Keep in mind, 15% of the males are colorblind so adjusting these colors to your own preference would be nice.

I vote YES, :cheer:
I'm not sure what the advantages are compared to Sunbird, but sunbird is NOT very informative
(because of lack of recognition/colors)
